Beaming Harlow College into your home

CALL it Utopian or Dystopian: Harlow College is holding its annual Open Event, predominantly intended for prospective new students to visit the premises and speak to their potential tutors, over Zoom this year.

The six-night event is taking place between 6pm and 7.30pm daily, from Thursday November 5 to Thursday November 12, and comes as Boris Johnson announces a second-round of nationwide restrictions for UK residents due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the official online booking form, Harlow College writes: “At this time of the year we would normally be looking forward to welcoming you onto campus where you would have the opportunity to see for yourself all the wonderful facilities and meet with staff and students, but as we’re sadly not able to do that at present, we’re bringing the campus to you!”

Those who are interested must declare their area of interest at the time of registration so they can be allocated the correct webinar, hosted by staff and tutors within the department.

“You won’t be seen or heard, so just sit back and relax,” says the booking form which also states,  “Don’t forget to research your questions – you can ask as many questions as you like in the Q&A.”

Paul Woods, marketing and communications at Harlow College, explains: “Each virtual event is recorded and links to the videos will be sent to every attendee, to local schools as well as being available to view on the college website.

“We have studied how other colleges deliver their virtual events and have come up with what we believe to be the most dynamic way of presenting the event. It’s still very much a learning curve for us. In February, when we host our next events, we will probably have adapted the way we do it, to make it even more successful.

“We can’t welcome visitors in person and show them around the campus, although we do offer 360 virtual tours for most areas in our online presentation.”

A-Levels, Science, Engineering, Supported Studies, Hospitality & Catering, Visual Arts (Art & Design, Photography and Fashion), Performing Arts (Acting, Dance & Music), Media & Gaming, Business & IT, Journalism, Access to Higher Education, Sport & Protective Services, Childcare & Social Care, Hair & Beauty, Construction, Automotive and Building Services (Electrical & Plumbing) are all the subjects of the 20-minute webinars.
